The latest Vince Flynn blockbuster, Pursuit of Honor, hits shelves next week and is expected to shoot to the top of the hardcover bestseller list. Accordingly, Flynn’s book tour schedule has been posted.
The author has also prominently posted endorsements from controversial right wing conservatives on his site, including Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly.
Limbaugh? Seriously? Perhaps Flynn’s publisher has determined that 90% of Flynn’s readers identify with the extreme right-wing of Republican party. If that is the case, then more power to him.
But if this is just a reflection of Flynn’s personal politics, then it’s just a bad business move. When it comes to celebrity book endorsements, you want celebs that are universally loved on your side. Like Oprah. And if you’ve got to get a political on your side, try for Colin Powell. At least he’s earned respect from all sides.
The guy you don’t align with is Limbaugh, the defacto leader of a politcal party in ruins. Limbaugh has just as many millions of haters as he has fans. Vince Flynn has become a mass market sensation. He’s earned it, and his fans love that his primary protagonist, the forever-rogue agent Mitch Rapp, is a radical. Trust me, Vince. Your fans don’t want you aligning with real-life radicals.
